FAFSA 101

Completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is essential for accessing scholarships and government aid at Shaw University. The FAFSA helps determine your eligibility for financial aid, including federal grants, work-study programs, and loans.

Personal Information: Collect your Social Security number, tax returns, W-2s, bank statements, and records of investments.

Parent Information: If you are a dependent student, you will also need your parents’ Social Security numbers, tax returns, W-2s, and other financial records.
Visit fsaid.ed.gov to create your FSA ID. This ID is your personal account username and password that you’ll use to sign the FAFSA form electronically. Note that it may take up to three days for your FSA ID to be verified before you can use it to sign the FAFSA (Studentaid.gov).
Go to the FAFSA Website: Visit FAFSA.gov and select “Start Here.”

Log In: Log in using your FSA ID. If you’re starting the form for the first time, select “Start New FAFSA.”

Enter Student Information: Provide your name, Social Security number, and date of birth exactly as they appear on your Social Security card to avoid errors.

School Selection: Enter Shaw University’s school code 002962 to ensure your FAFSA information is sent to Shaw University.

Dependency Status: Answer questions to determine your dependency status. If you’re a dependent student, you’ll need to provide your parents’ financial information .

Financial Information: Use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) to import your tax information directly from the IRS, if eligible. This ensures accuracy and simplifies the process.
Review Information: Carefully review all the information you’ve entered to ensure it’s accurate. Look for any errors or missing information.

Sign and Submit: Use your FSA ID to sign the FAFSA form electronically. If you’re a dependent student, one of your parents will also need to sign using their FSA ID.
Check your email and your FAFSA account regularly for updates. Follow any additional instructions from Shaw University or the federal student aid office.
