  • During a tutoring appointment, you can expect one-on-one help that is tailored to you. Our tutors will work with you to understand what you need and what you’re struggling with. They will explain things clearly, give you examples, and make sure you get lots of practice. Remember that your tutor is there to support you in reaching your academic goals. Be open to asking questions, seeking clarification, and actively participating in the learning process to make the most of your appointment.

  • You should bring your assignment, assignment guidelines, rubric and any notes/drafts that you have done. Be sure to complete any required course readings that you can ahead of time.

Think about what you want to achieve during the session and any specific topics you’d like to cover. This will help you and your tutor stay focused. Come with an open mind and be ready to share your current understanding of the subject or the challenges you’ve faced. During the appointment, be willing to actively engage with your tutor by asking questions and seeking clarification when needed. Your participation is key to a successful lesson!

  • If you choose an online appointment, you will work with a writing tutor in real-time in WC Online. Meetings take place using the built-in appointment module. Log in to WC Online five minutes before the start of your appointment. Then, select “Start or Join Online Appointment.” In the online appointment video chat, you may upload your assignment guidelines using the file upload button or share your screen.

  • Appointment Scheduling: You can schedule appointments in advance through our online booking system, WC Online, or by coming into the tutoring center. Walk-in appointments are dependent on tutor availability.

Reschedule and Cancellation: If you need to cancel your appointment, you can do so in WC Online or contact the Writing and Tutorial Center at 919-546-8468 or writingcenter@shawu.edu.

Lateness: If you are running late, please notify the tutoring center. Tutors may not be able to extend your appointment due to other commitments. If you do not notify your tutor, your appointment may be given to a walk-in client or canceled.

Professional Conduct: Students and tutors are expected to maintain professionalism and respect during tutoring sessions. Disruptive or disrespectful behavior may result in termination of the appointment.

No-Show Policy: A “No-Show” is defined as missing a scheduled appointment without notice. After three missed appointments in one semester, your ability to make appointments will be temporarily revoked. You are still encouraged to use the Writing Center on a walk-in basis.

Accommodation: If you require accommodation due to a disability or specific learning needs, please inform the tutoring center when scheduling your appointment so we can make appropriate arrangements.
